Department Of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics

INTRODUCTION

Environmental and natural resource economics is an emerging field of study in the developing countries, including Vietnam. Together with the country’s sustainable development strategy, environmental and natural resource economics has become an increasingly important field of concern in environmental protection and economic development.

 The department of environmental and natural resource economics of Nong Lam University has been established in 2004 for providing the undergraduate program in environmental and natural resource economics. Students majoring in environmental and natural resource economics are prepared for a variety of careers in both the private and public sectors.

 STAFF

Lectures at the department of environmental and natural resource economics were graduated from various recognized universities in the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, China, and the Philippines. Staff in the department are as follows:

LEARNING OUTCOME

The program in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics provides students with the necessary training for the application of economic tools to evaluate the allocation and utilization of natural resources and the management of the natural environment.

The program emphasizes the use of economic theory and analytical methods for understanding the environmental and natural resource issues, predicting the likely effects of government policies and regulations, and devising solutions to the pressing economic and environmental problems at the local, regional and national levels, as well as in a global context.

Potential Occupations

Students graduating with this major may find employment in a wide range of fields from education and research to business and government. Graduates can find employment with local and national government agencies involved in environmental protection, natural resource management, land use planning, and public policy such as the departments of Natural resource and Environment,  Agriculture and Rural Development, Investment and Planning, Finance, and sub-departments of the district and the provincial People’s Committee, etc..

Graduates can also work for private sector with environmental compliance activities or conservation initiatives directed toward energy or other natural resources, and achieving self-imposed environmental goals (e.g. land reservation, water resource, mining, real estate, forestry, aquaculture, and fisheries). Opportunities also exist with private firms that seek to employ staff with economic training.

RESEARCH

Besides teaching, staff in the department has also conducted short term trainings, project evaluation and consultancy activities for many research and development projects funded by international organizations such as ICRAFT, WWF, IUCN, WINROCK, Danida, EEPSEA, HELVETAS. They also led projects at various levels. The main areas of staff research activity are given below.

·         Economic analysis of agricultural and agro-forestry systems,

·         Socioeconomic analysis and policy assessment for sustainable agriculture and natural resource management in the uplands of Vietnam and Southeast Asia Region,

·         Assessing the environmental and socioeconnomic impacts of payment for forest ecosystem services,

·         Economic valuation of ecosystem services from the wetland and others natural resources.

·         Economic analysis of food safety.

·         Economic analysis of climate change adaptation strategies.
